IoT and Field Hardware Development

Collect reliable data from the field and connect it to the systems that act on it. Virstack designs custom GPS trackers, ground sensors and IoT devices, engineered to integrate seamlessly with our software platforms.

From remote monitoring sites to vehicles and critical infrastructure, we design hardware and software together so data arrives where it is needed, even in places with limited connectivity.

What Is IoT and Field Hardware?

Field hardware covers the devices that capture data where it happens, such as GPS trackers on vehicles and equipment, environmental and water level sensors, and gateways that relay readings from remote sites. IoT connects these devices to software, so readings become alerts, dashboards and reports.

We help you choose between existing devices and custom designs, based on your environment, power and connectivity constraints, and the data your teams need.

Our IoT and Field Hardware Services
  • Custom GPS Trackers: Design trackers for vehicles, equipment and assets, with reporting intervals and battery life matched to your use case.
  • Environmental and Ground Sensors: Monitor water levels, soil, weather, vibration and other conditions at remote or critical sites.
  • Gateways and Connectivity: Relay data over cellular, satellite, LoRaWAN or other networks, selected for coverage and power at each site.
  • Store-and-Forward Data Handling: Devices keep recording when a connection drops and send the data once it returns, so readings are not lost.
  • Device Management and Updates: Monitor device health, battery and connectivity, and manage configuration and firmware updates securely.
  • Platform Integration: Connect device data to dashboards, geofencing rules, AI analytics and partner systems through secure APIs.
Why Choose Virstack for IoT and Field Hardware?
  • Software and Hardware Together: From field sensors to cloud dashboards, we design hardware and software to work as one solution.
  • Built for Low-Connectivity Environments: We design for real operating conditions, including remote areas with limited or intermittent connectivity.
  • Security from Device to Cloud: Device authentication, encrypted data transfer and access controls are designed in from the start. Learn about our Cybersecurity services.
  • Engineers Own the Architecture: Our engineers design the architecture and review the code, so responsibility for quality and security is never left to AI.
IoT and Field Hardware Use Cases
  • Flood Early Warning: Water level and rainfall sensors feed alert rules, so teams receive warnings as conditions change.
  • Asset and Fleet Tracking: Trackers on vehicles, vessels and equipment feed geofencing and reporting, including in remote areas.
  • Environmental Monitoring: Sensors at protected sites record conditions continuously and complement satellite imagery between passes.
  • Critical Infrastructure: Vibration, intrusion and condition sensors help monitor pipelines, power lines and facilities.
  • Agriculture: Soil and weather sensors support irrigation planning and crop management.
Our IoT and Field Hardware Process
  • Requirements and Site Assessment: We define what needs to be measured, where and how often, and the power and connectivity available at each site.
  • Device Selection or Design: We recommend suitable existing devices, or design custom hardware where your requirements call for it.
  • Prototype and Field Trial: We build prototypes and test them in representative conditions before wider deployment.
  • Integration and Rollout: We connect devices to your platform, dashboards and alert rules, and support installation and rollout.
  • Monitoring and Support: We monitor device health, manage updates and support maintenance as your network grows.

    FAQ
Do you build custom hardware or use existing devices?

Both. Where a suitable device already exists, we use it to reduce cost and time. We design custom hardware when your environment, data or integration needs call for it.

How do devices work in areas with poor connectivity?

We select the network for each site, such as cellular, satellite or LoRaWAN, and use store-and-forward so data is kept on the device until a connection is available.

    How long do batteries last?

Battery life depends on reporting frequency, sensors, network type and temperature. We size power, including solar where suitable, around your required reporting interval and maintenance schedule.

    How is device data secured?

Devices authenticate with the platform, data is encrypted in transit, and access to readings is controlled by role. We also plan for secure firmware updates.

Can IoT data connect with our existing systems?

Yes, where suitable interfaces are available. Device data can feed dashboards, geofencing rules, AI analytics and partner systems through secure APIs.

How long does a project take?

Timing depends on whether existing devices fit, the number of sites and field trial requirements. We provide an estimate after the requirements and site assessment.
